SAT Prep: Why SATs Are Becoming More Important Again

“This is great for East Lyme High School students.”
So said an East Lyme educator and client of The Learning Consultants as she showed me an article indicating how important SAT scores were for last year’s college admissions.
She correctly understood what so many Connecticut parents did not: The SAT is great if you attend a strong high school.
“Everyone has As…” she noted as she summarized the article. “But it’s unfair that a kid from East Lyme (as well as Old Lyme, Essex, Madison, Guilford et al strong high schools) has the same As as kids from less strong schools.
Over the past several years, the college admissions landscape has shifted dramatically. Many institutions adopted test‑optional policies, largely in response to pandemic disruptions and concerns about equity. But now, a renewed trend is emerging: an increasing number of colleges are bringing back SAT/ACT requirements.
For families and students in Shoreline, CT and throughout Connecticut, this resurgence has positive implications. We live in an area where students do well compared to students nationally.
That emphasis is often missed by parents and students alike as they think their child, who has a good score compared to most nationally, has perhaps an average score compared to start students in East Lyme.
