College: The Fork In the Road… for LIFE

By General Education Advice

I am from New Jersey.  Despite living in Connecticut for 27 years and Washington DC for a decade more, I still have a NJ voice in my head when I deal with those who spout idiocy that can affect others.

Connecticut people are so nice that they likely cringe at that harshness.

Here’s the comment that bothers me the most: “it doesn’t matter where you go to college.”

Now… I know that the person making the comment is likely limiting the remark to how much college affects one career.  There is another large 10 page rebuttal I have regarding that specific comment.  But here, I’ll stick to the part that is not thought through enough before making that comment.

It’s the first major fork in the road of life.

Where a student goes to college shapes their friends, their network, their opportunities—and often their trajectory for the next decade.

We’ve seen it too often: students drift into a college because it was convenient, a few people they know attended or the weather. A few years later, they’re unhappy, disengaged, or starting over.

To be clear, we don’t advise our student to  chase prestige—we help students find the right fit, academically and personally. We ask the questions most families aren’t asking:

  • What environment brings out your best?

  • What kind of people do you want to be around?

  • What future are you actually working toward?

This isn’t just about getting in—it’s about launching well.
