College to career
By Daryl CapuanoGeneral Education AdviceIf you have read any news about recent college graduates, you might get depressed.
College- not so long ago- nearly guaranteed employment post-college. This is less true. But it still is true – wildly true – in comparison to not going to college. Those Tik-Tok influencers who claim otherwise are mostly attempting to validate their own choice of dropping out while claiming (often lying but almost all exaggerating) that they are making plenty of money… by telling people to skip college.
However, there is some truth to the notion that the once true: “I’ll send my kid to college and he’ll figure it out from there” is no longer a good plan.
For many families, getting into a “good college” is the goal. But the real test lies after college: making the leap from degree to meaningful employment. Increasingly, students (and employers) expect college to be more than a credential—it must build the skills, networks, and mindset for a successful career.
That’s where career‑oriented college counseling becomes indispensable. Years ago, I started Career Counseling Connecticut to help young college grads figure out their career path. Now, I realize that it would be wiser to start developing career themes – not specific careers – at an earlier age.
