College to Career Counseling
By Daryl CapuanoGeneral Education AdviceCollege-to-Career Counseling in Old Lyme, Connecticut: Finding Direction in a Rapidly Changing World
The world of work is changing faster than most families expected.
I have an oddly optimistic view for my clients in Shoreline, CT.
Chaos creates opportunity. Really.
I’ll explain my own path to give even a touch of possibility.
I was an attorney in large organizations in large cities. My switch into educator-counselor, starting an education business, particularly in coastal Connecticut, was considered crazy by those who were firmly ensconced in what I will call the Old World of Work mentality. I hedge only by noting that I did what I did out of a true sense of calling, primarily, and out of a sense that the world of work was rapidly shifting such that my idealistic vision was also practical. I would not have articulated with clarity back then. But I knew that the New World of Work was happening and that creating one’s own work was the wave of the future.
I see that now for YOUR CHILDREN. Things could be great.
But… I also know we are in massive uncertainty.
Artificial intelligence, automation, remote work, and shifting economic conditions have transformed the transition from college to career. For many students in Old Lyme, Connecticut, and nearby communities such as Lyme, East Lyme, Old Saybrook, Essex, and Madison, choosing a college major is no longer simply an academic decision. It is increasingly tied to long-term career direction.
At The Learning Consultants, we have seen a major shift in college counseling over the past decade. Today, effective guidance must include college-to-career counseling — helping students connect their college choices to realistic career paths in what we call the New World of Work.
Families understand that college is expensive and that outcomes matter. But many students still struggle with direction.
One recent student illustrates the challenge — and the opportunity.
Ellen and Connor: A Common Situation in Old Lyme
Ellen lives in Old Lyme, CT, and like many parents in the area, she is thoughtful and well-informed. She wanted her son Connor to have every opportunity.
Connor was a solid student at Lyme-Old Lyme High School. He earned good grades, participated in activities, and had strong teacher recommendations. By most measures, he was doing well.
But when Ellen began asking about college plans, Connor’s answers were uncertain.
“I don’t know what I want to do,” he said.
At first, Ellen was not overly concerned. Many students feel uncertain during high school. College is often seen as the place where students figure things out.
But over time she began to worry.
Connor’s uncertainty did not seem temporary. It seemed deeper.
When conversations turned to majors or careers, he became quiet or changed the subject. He could not picture himself doing any particular kind of work.
Like many capable students in Old Lyme and the Connecticut shoreline communities, Connor had done everything he was supposed to do academically — but he had never been guided through a serious process of career exploration.
Ellen began searching for college counseling and career counseling near Old Lyme, Connecticut, and eventually contacted The Learning Consultants.
The New World of Work Requires Earlier Direction
In earlier decades, students often went to college planning to figure out their direction later.
That approach worked reasonably well when career paths were more predictable.
Today, it is riskier.
Students who graduate without direction often struggle in the early years after college. Entry-level jobs frequently require specific skills or focused preparation. Internships and early experiences matter more than ever.
Families in Old Lyme, East Lyme, Lyme, and Old Saybrook increasingly recognize that college planning and career planning must happen together.
This is the foundation of college-to-career counseling.
Starting the Process
When Connor first came in, he appeared polite but unsure. Like many students, he assumed that career direction would simply appear over time.
It rarely does.
We began with structured exploration:
-
Career interest assessments
-
Personality analysis
-
Skills evaluation
-
Discussions about strengths and preferences
-
Realistic career exploration
Connor discovered something important: he had interests and strengths that pointed toward certain kinds of work — even if he had never fully articulated them before.
The process helped him move from vague uncertainty to concrete possibilities.
From Confusion to Excitement
The turning point came when Connor began to see realistic career paths that matched his strengths.
Instead of hearing abstract advice about “following your passion,” he began to see specific possibilities:
-
Fields that matched his natural abilities
-
College majors that made sense
-
Skills he could begin developing
-
Internships that would be useful
-
Colleges where those paths were strong
His attitude changed noticeably.
Instead of saying, “I have no idea what I want to do,” he began asking practical questions:
-
“What majors fit this direction?”
-
“Which colleges are strong for this?”
-
“What should I be doing in high school?”
-
“What internships should I look for in college?”
Ellen noticed the difference immediately.
Connor was no longer anxious about the future. He was engaged in planning it.
Confusion had turned into excitement.
Why College-to-Career Counseling Matters
Connor’s story reflects a broader pattern we see across the Connecticut shoreline and southeastern Connecticut.
Many capable students feel uncertain about their future not because they lack ability, but because they lack structured guidance.
College-to-career counseling helps students:
-
Understand their strengths
-
Explore realistic careers
-
Choose appropriate majors
-
Select colleges strategically
-
Develop useful skills
-
Build confidence
Students who gain direction earlier often make better college decisions and experience less stress during and after college.
Planning in an Uncertain World
We are living in a period of rapid change.
Artificial intelligence and automation are transforming industries. Career paths are evolving. The future is less predictable than in the past.
This uncertainty makes thoughtful planning more important — not less.
Students who understand their strengths and develop adaptable skills are better positioned to succeed regardless of how the job market evolves.
College-to-career counseling helps students build that foundation.
