College to Career Counseling
By Daryl CapuanoGeneral Education AdviceI have been a member of the World Future Society for nearly 20 years.
Anyone can join. So it means nothing more than a long-standing interest in the future. For me, this has been an interest in helping young adults gain admission to colleges of their choice and pursue careers of their interest.
My first main office was at The Women and Family Life Center in Guilford. The good folks there viewed their mission as helping those in their community and realized that partnering with The Learning Consultants to create educational programs was one way to do so.
I gave a talk many moons ago on The New World of Work.
Based on what I read/researched/discussed with my fellow futurists, I nearly guaranteed that work would be less stable. Career paths would be much more like consultant paths if consultants jumped from one project to the next in different organizations.
Building skills – communication and problem solving skills will always be valuable – was critical for career success.
Gaining admission to college was as crass as it sounds also gaining admission to networks of people who would end up being the main source of helping secure employment.
This proved to be true before AI.
Now… it is true.
Artificial intelligence is changing the world of work. Today’s high school students will enter after college.
Parents sense it.
Students hear about it.
But few families know how to prepare for it.
This is where The Learning Consultants helps families in Guilford, Madison, and throughout the Connecticut shoreline develop thoughtful college plans designed for the future economy.
College admissions still matter.
But preparation for life after college matters even more.
The Goal Is Not Just College Admission
Many high school students focus on:
-
Grades
-
SAT or ACT scores
-
Advanced Placement courses
-
College acceptance letters
These are important.
But they are only part of the picture.
Students entering college today will graduate into a job market shaped by artificial intelligence and rapid technological change.
The key question becomes:
Is your student developing the skills that will matter after college?
Why Guilford and Madison Families Must Think Long-Term
Families in Guilford and Madison place a strong value on education.
Students often attend excellent public and private schools and prepare carefully for college admission.
But college planning should include more than choosing schools.
Students benefit from:
-
Strategic course selection
-
Academic strength-building
-
Development of real interests
-
Long-term direction
College works best when students arrive with purpose.
How The Learning Consultants Helps Students Prepare
My work with high school students focuses on building strong foundations for both college admission and long-term success.
Academic Mastery
Students need genuine academic strength, particularly in:
-
Mathematics
-
Analytical reading
-
Writing
-
Problem solving
These skills remain valuable regardless of technological change.
Tutoring and academic coaching focus on building real competence, not shortcuts.
Strategic College Planning
College planning includes:
-
Thoughtful college list development
-
Realistic admissions strategy
-
Essay development
-
Application planning
-
Timeline management
A structured approach reduces stress and improves outcomes.
Direction Before College
Students benefit enormously from early reflection on:
-
Interests
-
Strengths
-
Possible fields
-
Academic preferences
Students who begin college with direction tend to perform better and make stronger decisions.
Why Early Planning Matters
Most students drift through high school assuming that college will clarify their future.
Often it does not.
Students who plan earlier develop:
-
Confidence
-
Motivation
-
Academic focus
-
Better decision-making
Planning transforms high school from a series of assignments into preparation for adulthood.

Application coaching
The goal is not simply admission to college.
The goal is preparation for a meaningful and adaptable future.
Students who plan early enter college with a powerful advantage.
