In person tutoring for younger students… far better
By Daryl CapuanoGeneral Education Advice“It just isn’t the same on so many levels.” Betsy, a mom from Old Lyme, noted. Her son attended Lyme-Old Lyme and had worked with one of his old tutors, who was now only meeting people online.
She’s right.
Students are already on the screen too much. They lack interpersonal interaction. The tutor she had in mind is someone I know. He only had his interests in mind,

He did not want to rent office space. That’s understandable from his perspective. But his attempts to claim “it’s all the same” rang hollow to Betsy. It is not all the same for the student.
I work with students online all the time. But my practice is primarily college counseling and higher-level test prep. The older the student, the less it matters, particularly if dealing with conversational topics.
But you don’t want to learn Algebra II virtually. It’s confusing and boring enough already. An in-person tutor is superior.
