Suburban Connecticut Students: The SAT Is Your Friend

Kaylie and Samantha: To SAT or not….

Kaylie and Samantha were two of my students (none of the names I use are ever student real names) from the 2022 cycle.  They had nearly identical PSAT scores (1100 and 1120)and attended the same Shoreline high school.   They both were delighted to hear about SAT optionality.   Kaylie decided not to prep for the SAT.  Samantha – at her parents’ urging – decided to prep for the SAT.

Since Connecticut schools mandate SAT tests, Kaylie did take the SAT.  As expected, she did not improve from her PSAT.  Despite knowing that she did not prepare, Kaylie felt bad about her score.  She told herself that she is “not a good test-taker” and she confessed to me during our college counseling sessions that she felt like she wasn’t smart.  In addition to the blow to her self-esteem, her college admissions chances were hurt. She had top grades and great activities but nearly a dozen top-tier schools rejected her.  While she received a modest scholarship from the school she attended, she felt like she felt mildly defeated when she left for school.

Samantha did prepare.  She took our SAT class and practiced.  Her March SAT went up 120 points: 80 points in verbal and 40 points in math.  She then worked with us individually.  We realized that her math fundamentals – not her math aptitude – were the problem.  Since I have noticed this school system seems to have this systemic problem, I was not surprised.  She then dug in for the spring SATs – focused on raising her math score.  She went up 20 points in verbal and 70 points in math.   She was now at 1350.  We worked in the summer for one more round of tests in the fall and she wound up with a 1420 (30 more points in verbal/40 in math). She had slightly lower grades than Kaylie but a more interesting activity list.  She was admitted to two elite colleges and was offered substantial scholarships at several very good colleges.

Why the SAT is a Particular Advantage for Suburban Students from Connecticut

Suburban students in Connecticut, known for their strong school systems and academic achievements, often find the SAT to be an advantageous tool in the college admissions process. With the growing competitiveness of college applications, the SAT offers students from Connecticut a unique opportunity to stand out and leverage their educational backgrounds. Here’s why the SAT is especially beneficial for suburban Connecticut students.

1. Access to Strong Educational Resources

Connecticut’s suburban schools are often ranked among the best in the nation, providing students with rigorous curriculums and exceptional teachers. This strong foundation equips students with the skills needed to excel on the SAT.

  • Why It Matters: Students from well-resourced schools are more likely to have exposure to advanced coursework, particularly in math and English, which directly correlates with SAT success.

2. Amplifying an Already Competitive Profile

Suburban students in Connecticut typically face stiff competition when applying to selective colleges, especially in the Northeast. Many applicants hail from similar backgrounds, making it essential to find ways to differentiate themselves.

  • How the SAT Helps: A strong SAT score can serve as a key differentiator, helping students stand out in a crowded applicant pool.

3. Bridging the Gap in Holistic Admissions

While grades, extracurriculars, and essays are all important, the SAT provides a quantifiable measure of academic ability that complements these aspects of a student’s application.

  • Why It’s Crucial for Connecticut Students: With many suburban students already excelling in activities like sports, music, or volunteer work, the SAT offers a chance to further bolster their profile with tangible, standardized evidence of academic readiness.

4. Leveraging Test-Optional Policies to Your Advantage

Even though many colleges have adopted test-optional policies, submitting a strong SAT score can still provide a significant edge—especially for students from Connecticut’s suburban schools.

  • How It Helps: Colleges often look for ways to distinguish high-achieving students from similar educational backgrounds. A stellar SAT score can reinforce an application and highlight a student’s academic potential.

5. Competing Beyond the Region

Students from Connecticut often apply to competitive schools across the country. The SAT, as a nationally recognized exam, ensures that suburban students can showcase their abilities in a way that’s easily understood and valued by admissions committees, regardless of location.

  • For Out-of-State Schools: A strong SAT score provides a universal benchmark, demonstrating a student’s readiness for academic rigor at schools unfamiliar with Connecticut’s grading systems.

6. Access to Personalized SAT Preparation

Suburban areas in Connecticut often have a wealth of resources for SAT preparation, including tutoring services, test prep centers, and online tools. These resources allow students to optimize their scores and maximize their potential.

  • Why This Matters: Personalized SAT preparation can address specific weaknesses and build confidence, giving suburban students an edge over peers who may not have access to such resources.

7. Scholarships and Financial Aid Opportunities

Many Connecticut families come from middle- to upper-middle-class backgrounds, which may place them ineligible for need-based financial aid. However, a high SAT score can open doors to merit-based scholarships.

  • Key Insight: Suburban students can use the SAT not only to gain admission to competitive schools but also to secure financial assistance, making higher education more affordable.

8. Showcasing Academic Excellence in a Rigorous Region

Connecticut is part of a highly competitive academic region, with students from neighboring states like New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey vying for spots at top colleges.

  • Advantage for SAT Takers: A high SAT score allows suburban students to highlight their ability to thrive in a competitive environment, reinforcing their readiness for the challenges of college-level academics.

9. Long-Term Benefits of SAT Preparation

Preparing for the SAT teaches valuable skills like critical thinking, time management, and problem-solving—all essential for success in college and beyond.

  • For Suburban Students: These skills align with the educational rigor already emphasized in Connecticut schools, giving students a head start in both college and their future careers.
