Kaylie and Samantha: To SAT or not….

Kaylie and Samantha were two of my students (none of the names I use are ever student real names) from the 2022 cycle.  They had nearly identical PSAT scores (1100 and 1120)and attended the same Shoreline high school.   They both were delighted to hear about SAT optionality.   Kaylie decided not to prep for the SAT.  Samantha – at her parents’ urging – decided to prep for the SAT.

Since Connecticut schools mandate SAT tests, Kaylie did take the SAT.  As expected, she did not improve from her PSAT.  Despite knowing that she did not prepare, Kaylie felt bad about her score.  She told herself that she is “not a good test-taker” and she confessed to me during our college counseling sessions that she felt like she wasn’t smart.  In addition to the blow to her self-esteem, her college admissions chances were hurt. She had top grades and great activities but nearly a dozen top-tier schools rejected her.  While she received a modest scholarship from the school she attended, she felt like she felt mildly defeated when she left for school.

Samantha did prepare.  She took our SAT class and practiced.  Her March SAT went up 120 points: 80 points in verbal and 40 points in math.  She then worked with us individually.  We realized that her math fundamentals – not her math aptitude – were the problem.  Since I have noticed this school system seems to have this systemic problem, I was not surprised.  She then dug in for the spring SATs – focused on raising her math score.  She went up 20 points in verbal and 70 points in math.   She was now at 1350.  We worked in the summer for one more round of tests in the fall and she wound up with a 1420 (30 more points in verbal/40 in math). She had slightly lower grades than Kaylie but a more interesting activity list.  She was admitted to two elite colleges and was offered substantial scholarships at several very good colleges.
