When to start test prep training? NOW

All Connecticut public school students have to take the SAT as part of graduation requirements.  The SAT will be important for many students to (1) gain admission to colleges of their choice (2) pay for their college and (3) their self-esteem.

I sometimes present my SAT students the following hypothetical:  have run a marathon in a few months.  For whatever reason, completing the marathon in some reasonable time is very important to my future.  I haven’t started training yet.  What would you advise?

“Start training immediately!” That’s the near universal reply.

But I tell you that I don’t like running.  And, I’m pretty busy with other activities.  And that I think the whole idea of having to run a marathon for my future is dumb.

Most all respond:  “It doesn’t matter.  You said that have to run the marathon because it is important for your future….” Then they stop and laugh knowingly.

The good news is that with proper training the SAT will help Connecticut students gain admission to colleges of their choice, pay for college and build their self-esteem.

Prepare for the inevitable and it will pay off.
