Meaning and purpose: Yes… that’s what is missing in your children’s lives
By Daryl CapuanoGeneral Education AdviceThis post will not be for everyone. It will not be for many. I will address the concepts of meaning and purpose. As such, what I write will not directly address getting into college, grades, or SAT scores.
It will, however, address all of the above and more if you understand and sort out how to make your children understand.
Nihilism. Life has no meaning.
This seems to be the dominant philosophy guiding many teens, boys in particular.
Nothing matters. So why try?
Why build a life through doing the uncomfortable – study for math; take SATs; search for colleges et al., when it “just doesn’t matter.I have an advantage when I work with young people. I am not their parent.
So I know how to talk about life in teenspeak and I know how to get teens to care about life.
I often do so while we are engaged in SAT Prep or college counseling. But once I get them to understand “the why”… they will do what they to do to build their lives.
