Connecticut Parents: Help your children launch

My next book will focus on the launch decade—the now-extended era spanning ages 16 to 26 during which young people work toward financial independence. The phrase “failure to launch” has become so commonplace that it may no longer carry the heavy impact it did just a few years ago.

To be clear, launching does not strictly require living on your own. Many young adults choose to live at home while working or studying because it simply makes practical sense. I am all for parents and children living together as long as everyone feels good about the arrangement. Moreover, I am highly mindful of the severe economic uncertainties and cost-of-living challenges facing young people today. In running Career Counseling Connecticut, I see this reality firsthand every single day.

However, my goal in working with parents across Connecticut is to help families head off these structural challenges long before their children reach their mid-twenties. Almost always, I can trace the root of a wayward twenty-something’s struggles back to a lack of intentional planning during high school and college—often because parents tried to be overly accommodating.

I will explore this in much greater depth in my forthcoming book, but essentially, a well-meaning desire to avoid putting pressure on young people has too often morphed from wise, gentle guidance into an unengaged hands-off approach: “We just let him make his own decisions.”

Left to their own devices, teens possess a natural developmental myopia, looking forward only as far as the next weekend. Without proactive guidance, this hands-off philosophy leaves young people entirely unequipped to navigate the modern transition to adulthood.
