The Comeback: Helping Your Child Bounce Back

By General Education Advice

A Rocky Start in High School

I first met Max when he was in high school in Old Lyme, Connecticut. A bright student with potential, Max’s main obstacle was his lack of discipline. Poor study habits and a general disinterest in structured learning left him floundering academically. Recognizing his need for support, Max’s parents enrolled him in my Student Mastery Program, where we focused on building effective study techniques, time management skills, and academic confidence.

With time and effort, Max’s grades improved enough for him to gain admission to a solid college. It was a victory for both Max and his family, but as I often tell parents, getting into college is only the first step.

Struggles in College

Once Max entered college, the lack of external structure quickly became a problem. Without the support of our program or the accountability of high school, Max reverted to his old habits. He struggled to keep up with coursework and felt aimless, unsure of why he was even in college in the first place. By the end of his freshman year, Max was deeply disillusioned with higher education and informed his parents that he didn’t want to return for his sophomore year.

His parents, while initially hesitant, eventually agreed. Their reasoning was simple: Max didn’t seem motivated, didn’t know what he wanted to do, and didn’t see the point of continuing college.  Spending money needlessly also did not make sense.

Exploring Alternatives

When Max’s parents reached out to me during this difficult time, I understood their concerns. I’ve always believed that college isn’t the right path for everyone, and I was open to exploring other options with Max.

We discussed alternatives such as the trades, military service, and certificate programs. However, Max rejected every suggestion. It wasn’t that he lacked interest; it was that he couldn’t envision himself thriving in those environments.  This has been historically true for my student-clients from Connecticut’s leafy suburbs and the same from clients who increasingly find me from other states and are similarly used to the by-products of affluence created by their hard-working parents.

Max’s uncertainty called for a deeper dive into his personality, strengths, and career goals. I suggested a series of career counseling sessions, using aptitude tests, personality assessments, and one-on-one discussions to uncover what he truly wanted.

Finding Focus: Digital Marketing

Max’s initial career aspiration seemed typical of many of today’s young: he wanted to be an “influencer.”  To be clear, I am open to discussing the new world of work with young adults in a way that most parents are not.  “Influencers” create a social media presence and then make money ad revenue, sponsorships, affiliate marketing, and a myriad of other possibilities.  If someone actually makes it as an influencer, they can do well.  But the path has similar challenges to as those who hope to become professional athletes, entertainers, and musicians.  The odds are not good.

Through this process, a theme began to emerge: Max had a creative streak and a strong interest in technology, along with a knack for problem-solving. Business was a natural fit, but traditional fields like finance or management didn’t resonate with him. Instead, we zeroed in on digital marketing, a rapidly growing field where Max’s skills could shine.

This clarity was a turning point. Armed with a clear goal, Max used his year off to explore the realities of life without a degree. He worked part-time jobs, learning quickly that opportunities for 19-year-olds without higher education were limited.  He also learned that becoming an influencer was not so easy.  The experience gave him a new perspective on the value of college—not as an abstract goal but as a means to a meaningful career.

A Fresh Start

Fortunately, Max’s college was understanding of his situation and allowed him to re-enroll for his sophomore year. This time, however, Max returned with renewed purpose and focus. We continued to work together as he adjusted to his second chance, setting academic goals and creating a structured plan for success.

Max embraced his coursework, particularly classes related to marketing and business strategy. He sought out internships and networking opportunities, gaining hands-on experience in his chosen field. By his junior year, he had not only improved his grades but also secured a competitive summer internship with a digital marketing agency.

Thriving and Moving Forward

Today, Max is thriving both academically and professionally. He’s on track to graduate with a degree in business, specializing in digital marketing, and he’s already fielding job offers in his chosen field. His journey is a testament to the power of persistence, clarity, and the right support.

Lessons from Max’s Story

Max’s story highlights several important lessons for students and parents navigating similar challenges:

  1. College Isn’t a One-Size-Fits-All Path
Not every student is ready for the independence and rigor of college immediately after high school. It’s okay to take a step back to reevaluate.
  2. Career Clarity is Crucial
Without a clear sense of purpose, college can feel aimless. Career counseling and self-discovery can provide the direction students need to thrive.
  3. Support Makes the Difference
Whether it’s through tutoring, mentoring, or career guidance, having someone in your corner can help students overcome obstacles and unlock their potential.
  4. It’s Never Too Late to Turn Things Around
Max’s year off wasn’t a failure—it was an opportunity for growth. His ability to return to college with a clear plan shows that setbacks can lead to success with the right mindset.

A Bright Future

Max’s turnaround is a reminder that even the rockiest starts can lead to incredible outcomes. For students and parents facing similar challenges, the path forward may not always be clear, but with the right support and guidance, it’s possible to transform uncertainty into opportunity.

If you or your child are feeling lost or unsure about the next step, let’s work together to create a plan that leads to success. After all, every student deserves the chance to thrive.
