Why Human Interaction For Learning Matters More Than Ever

Nearly straight A’s.
On paper, she looked like an excellent student. You might reasonably assume that she had mastered most of the material taught in school and simply needed some SAT-specific strategies, practice, and refinement.
Then we started working with her.
It quickly became apparent that her actual math skills were nowhere near what her grades suggested. She had significant deficiencies in foundational concepts—skills she should have learned and practiced years earlier. These weren’t obscure SAT tricks or unusually difficult problems. There were basic mathematical ideas she simply did not understand well enough to use independently.
The discrepancy was startling.
How does a nearly straight-A student get this far without actually knowing the material?
Grade inflation is so rampant now that I assumed this was the main culprit.
Eventually, she told us that AI was the bigger reason.
She acknowledged that she had been using AI to do much of her homework. And when tests exposed gaps in her understanding, many of those consequences disappeared through retakes, corrections, extra opportunities, and other grading practices that allowed the final grade to look considerably better than her first demonstration of mastery.
She did add that the lenient policies – such as retaking tests and easy extra credit enabled her to bump her grade also.
The result was a transcript full of success without the corresponding foundation of knowledge.
Later, she admitted the same thing to her parents. And her parents weren’t entirely surprised. They had already sensed that something wasn’t adding up.
The Grade Is Not the Learning
This student’s story matters because she is not alone.
AI has made it astonishingly easy for students to produce correct-looking work without doing the intellectual work required to arrive at the answer.
A student can ask AI to solve an equation, summarize a chapter, write a paragraph, explain a historical event, or complete a homework assignment. The finished product can look terrific.
But producing an answer and learning how to produce an answer are two very different things.
The distinction becomes obvious when you put a student across the table from a skilled teacher or tutor.
Ask her a question.
Then ask, “Why?”
Ask her to do the next problem without assistance.
Change one element of the problem.
Ask her to explain her reasoning aloud.
Suddenly, you can see what the student actually knows.
That human interaction is extraordinarily difficult to fake.
AI Isn’t the Real Problem
We aren’t anti-AI. Used properly, AI can be an extraordinary educational tool. It can explain difficult concepts in different ways, generate practice problems, provide feedback, and help motivated students explore subjects far beyond what they encounter in a classroom.
The problem is substitution.
When AI substitutes for the student’s thinking rather than supporting it, the assignment may get completed while the learning never happens.
Combine that with a grading system that repeatedly gives students ways to erase evidence of non-mastery, and parents can receive a dangerously reassuring signal.
An A should mean something.
But when homework can be completed with AI, assessments can be repeatedly retaken, and grades can be rescued through policies that don’t necessarily require durable mastery, the report card can cease to be a reliable measure of what a student can actually do.
That is how a student can earn nearly straight A’s while accumulating years of academic gaps.
The SAT Can Be an Uncomfortable Reality Check
Standardized tests are imperfect. But one reason SAT preparation can be revealing is that eventually the student has to sit down and solve problems independently.
The test doesn’t care what grade appeared on last semester’s report card.
It doesn’t care that homework was turned in.
It doesn’t care how polished an AI-assisted assignment looked.
A student has to read the question, understand the underlying concept, decide what to do, and execute.
When our student couldn’t do that consistently, our job wasn’t simply to teach her a bag of SAT tricks. We had to identify the missing foundations and begin rebuilding them.
And something important happened.
She started learning.
With a human being sitting across from her, there was nowhere for confusion to hide—but there was also someone there to help her through it.
We could see the hesitation before an incorrect answer. We could ask how she reached a conclusion. We could discover whether she misunderstood the mathematics or merely made a careless error. We could recognize when she was memorizing a procedure without understanding it. We could adjust an explanation in real time and then ask another question to see whether the concept had actually clicked.
That isn’t merely tutoring.
That is teaching.
Kids Need People Who Notice
The great danger in today’s educational environment isn’t simply that students have access to AI.
It’s that adults may increasingly mistake completed work for learning.
Real teaching is interactive. A good teacher, tutor, or learning consultant doesn’t merely deliver information. We observe. We question. We challenge. We listen.
We notice the student who says “I get it” but can’t explain it.
We notice the student who can imitate an example but can’t solve a slightly different problem.
We notice the bright child who has developed sophisticated strategies for avoiding the uncomfortable experience of not knowing something.
And then we do something a piece of software cannot accomplish by simply supplying an answer:
We hold the student accountable for thinking.
That accountability doesn’t have to be harsh. In fact, the best learning relationships are often warm, encouraging, and deeply supportive.
But they are real.
“You don’t understand this yet. That’s okay. We’re going to figure out where you got lost, and then we’re going to learn it.”
There is enormous educational power in that interaction.
Parents: Don’t Let the Transcript Fool You
If your child is earning excellent grades, celebrate the accomplishment—but remain curious about what those grades represent.
Ask your child to explain what they’re learning.
Occasionally look at the work rather than only the grade.
Ask how AI is being used.
Pay attention when standardized-test performance seems dramatically inconsistent with school grades. Notice when your child becomes uncomfortable doing academic work without a device or outside assistance.
Most importantly, don’t assume that an A automatically means mastery.
Sometimes it does.
Sometimes it doesn’t.
Our student’s parents already sensed there was a problem. Working with her gave everyone something they had been missing: an independent, human assessment of what she could actually do.
Once we could see the gaps, we could address them.
Human Interaction Matters More Than Ever
AI isn’t going away. Nor should it.
Our children will grow up in a world in which knowing how to use AI effectively will be an important skill. But that makes genuine education more important, not less.
Students still need mathematical intuition. They still need reading comprehension. They still need vocabulary, background knowledge, reasoning, persistence, and the ability to communicate an idea in their own words.
Above all, they need to learn how to think when nobody—and no machine—is supplying the next answer.
That’s where skilled human interaction becomes invaluable.
