Parents of Juniors: Time for college…. Here’s the plan:
By Daryl CapuanoGeneral Education AdviceThe first meeting is the big college kick-off
(1) Intake regarding the student’s college desires as well as discussion regarding which factors typically matter to students. Here, many students do not really know how they would feel about factors such as the size and location of the school. I walk through the common factors that matter to students (location (both regionally and the urban-rural continuum), size, programs of interest, cost, prestige, student body, and idiosyncratic factors.
(2) Evaluation of student’s admissions possibilities Grades/test scores/activities and anything else that will shape admissions (3) Advice regarding schools that will be on the initial college shopping listHere, we craft a list that will contain schools where the students will most likely apply, consider applying, and a far bigger list of colleges to explore
(4) Advice on how to improve admissions likelihoodHere, we help take the nagging away from parents 🙂
(5) Game plan for the overview related to college selection/admissionsNormally, this would involve visiting in person but there are other ways to evaluate fit that we explain to students.
(6) Essay and application editing (and, for some, interview prep) becomes the biggest part of my work in the application process. This starts in late summer senior year.
(7) Guidance related to admissions strategy, particularly Early Decision/Action is also a significant part of the last stages of the work.
For an increasing number of students, we work on college to career considerations. We provide tests/evaluations on what career paths are best suited for our young clients.
