How to help your children: “guidance” matters more than ever

By General Education Advice

Imagine you were a parent at the start of the Industrial Revolution.

Explaining the practical world to your children would be a big problem.  Your world was changing and about to change in unprecedented ways.  How could you guide them?  You only knew about farming or other pre-Industrial occupations and pathways to financial independence.

We are in something more significant than the Industrial Revolution which – hard to believe – spanned 75 years.

The work world is changing at breathtaking speed.

The next 15 years may see as much change as the entire Industrial Revolution.

Hyperbole?  Look around… the pandemic accelerated massive change that was happening pre-pandemic.

I have given enormous thought to this issue, not only due to my work, but as the father of three, and as a community member in Old Saybrook, CT and the surrounding towns where I interact with parents of teens who are wondering what they can do to help their children sort out college (or not) and college-career issues.

Happy to help.
