How Tutoring Alleviates Stress
By Daryl CapuanoGeneral Education AdviceStress has increased in teens
I recall walking into our Old Saybrook, CT or Madison, CT offices in the mid 2000s for our SAT classes.
Joyful pandemonium. Not because of SAT prep but because a bunch of teens were together without parental supervision. Students from Shoreline, CT would meet each other or they would see friends from their local high schools. I delighted in the socialization but would need to get things in order so I could teach.
Now… walk into most high school classrooms – without teachers present – and you’ll hear eerie silence. The phones…..
Have the phones led to increased stress?
The stress level of students has increased dramatically. The reasons are multifaceted – far beyond technology – and partially unknown.
But I see it. Students are super-stressed.
What I do know is “we” – our tutoring/counseling team have become more than just tutors for many of our students.
Here are some of the reasons:
1. Personalized Attention and Customized Learning
- Impact: Tutors can tailor their teaching to the student’s individual learning style, pace, and needs, making the learning process more efficient and less overwhelming.
- Benefit: This personalized approach often leads to quicker understanding and mastery of subjects, reducing the frustration and stress associated with learning difficulties.
2. Building Confidence and Independence
- Process: Tutors provide positive reinforcement and constructive feedback, crucial for building self-confidence.
- Outcome: As students become more confident in their abilities, they are less likely to feel overwhelmed by academic challenges, thereby reducing stress.
3. Time Management and Organizational Skills
- Teaching Method: Tutors often help students develop time management and organizational skills.
- Result: Better time management leads to less last-minute studying and cramming, which are major sources of stress.
4. Providing a Safe Space for Questions and Errors
- Environment: Tutoring offers a judgment-free zone where students can ask questions and make mistakes without fear of embarrassment.
- Effect: This encourages a healthier, more relaxed approach to learning.
5. Preparation for Exams and Assignments
- Strategy: Tutors can help students prepare systematically for exams and assignments, alleviating the anxiety associated with these high-stakes evaluations.
- Advantage: Students feel more in control and less stressed when they are well-prepared.
6. Support Beyond Academics
- Aspect: Tutors often provide emotional support and mentorship, helping students navigate the pressures of school life.
- Advantage: This support can significantly decrease stress levels by making students feel heard and understood.
