Parents of boys: See Julie Jargon’s articles in the Wall St. Journal
By Daryl CapuanoGeneral Education AdviceJulie Jargon has written a series of extraordinary articles on the challenges that are facing boys. I have been working with tweens/teens/young men for the last 20 years. My work in this area became more “national” – than simply Connecticut based – after my book on motivating boys came out in 2012.
Ms. Jargon is one of the few prominent writers who seems to grasp that we are facing an underreported crisis. Boys are floundering… correction… have been floundering. Anecdotally, I noticed the issue around 15 years ago. When clients came to me for our Student Mastery Program, those who came for motivational issues were almost all boys. Girls would come for tutoring/skill enhancement.
I predicted… and sadly was right… that the objective results would soon play out as follows: about 10% on what I called The Path of Abundance, 60% on The Path of Struggle and 30% on The Path of Disaster. I defined the latter as not being financially independent in one’s early thirties.
WSJ has a paywall but you might be able to read an article or two for free. If not, let me know. Regardless, Ms. Jargon is right on point.
